Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP)
The Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP) is part of the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019 and is in alignment with the VA’s National Strategy for Preventing Veterans suicide. VSC’s approach with this grant is multi-faceted: Through evidence-based training, we offer community education in modalities such as Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), and Critical Time Intervention (CTI). These curriculums are offered to the community at no cost and CEUs may be available upon request. The other primary component is crisis response, where VSC works with other community stakeholders, including non-profit organizations, Veterans Service Organizations, churches, businesses, law enforcement, and first responders to build local and ground-level response teams for Veterans who are experiencing a mental health crisis. Both North Carolina-Certified Peer Support Specialists and Case Managers work to guide and connect Veterans to appropriate resources that lead to self-sufficiency and a healthy lifestyle.
This program also provides the following services:
Extensive outreach to Veterans who may identify as “at risk” for suicide
Conducts and monitors baseline mental health screenings for all Veterans (ages 18+)
Education on suicide risk and prevention to families and communities
Case management services
Peer support services
Assistance with coordinating VA benefits for eligible Veterans and their families
